Canada Charitable and Political Donation Tax Credits

Charitable donations in Canada are regulated by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). To be considered a charitable donation, the organization must be registered with the CRA as a charity and must have a charitable purpose. Some of the most common charitable purposes include relief of poverty, advancement of education, advancement of religion, and other purposes beneficial to the community.

Individuals can claim charitable donations on their tax returns and receive a tax credit based on the amount donated. The Federal charitable donation tax credit is calculated as a percentage of the total amount donated which is 15% on the first $200 and 29% above that. Province of British Columbia charitable donation tax credit is calculated as a percentage of the total amount donated which is 5.06% on the first $200 and 14.70% above that.

Political donations in Canada are regulated by Elections Canada and are subject to different rules and restrictions. Individuals and organizations are allowed to make political donations, but there are limits on the amount that can be donated, and donations must be made to registered political parties or candidates. Political donations are not tax-deductible.
